Living in South Boston
South Boston, known locally as Southie, is a neighborhood of the City of Boston. It sits south and east of the Fort Point Channel, with Dorchester Bay along its southern shore. Boston began annexing the area in 1804. Its history goes back further: in 1776 George Washington placed cannon on Dorchester Heights, now in South Boston, which led the British to leave Boston on March 17 of that year.
The neighborhood is often described in parts. The East Side is known for its traditional triple-deckers. The West Side, near the Broadway and Andrew stations, has seen a great deal of new construction. To the north, the South Boston Waterfront, also called the Seaport District, has grown quickly in this century and is home to the Institute of Contemporary Art.
Homes you will find
- Traditional triple-deckers, many of them converted into condos, especially on the East Side
- Historic single-family homes on neighborhood side streets
- New-construction condo buildings on the West Side, some with fitness centers, clubrooms and shared terraces
- Waterfront condos in the Seaport District
Getting around
The MBTA Red Line stops at Broadway and Andrew, both on the west side of the neighborhood, with Broadway one stop from South Station. The Silver Line runs through a tunnel under Congress Street from South Station to the Seaport and continues to Logan Airport. MBTA bus routes 7, 9, 10 and 11 all end at the City Point bus terminal. Drivers have quick access to the Mass Pike (I-90).
Beaches, parks and everyday life
The shoreline is the big draw. Carson Beach, M Street Beach and Pleasure Bay form about three miles of beach and parkland along Dorchester Bay, popular with runners and walkers. Castle Island, a 22-acre park connected to the mainland by causeways, is home to the historic Fort Independence. M Street Park holds what is described as the nation’s first standing Vietnam memorial, and the L Street Brownies hold their New Year’s Day plunge in the bay. South Boston is served by Boston Public Schools, and families can contact the district directly for school details.
Who South Boston suits
South Boston suits buyers who want to live near the water and still reach downtown in minutes, condo buyers choosing between converted triple-deckers and new buildings with amenities, and investors interested in multi-family homes close to the Red Line.
