Living in Medford
Medford is about three miles northwest of Boston, along the Mystic River. It is home to most of Tufts University’s main campus and has a mix of busy squares and quiet residential streets. Medford Square is the traditional downtown, and neighborhoods such as West Medford, South Medford, Wellington and Fulton Heights each have their own character.
Homes you will find
- Single-family homes, from older colonials to mid-century capes
- Many two-family homes, a classic choice for owner-occupant buyers
- Condos in converted two-families and in larger buildings, especially near Wellington and the Mystic River
Getting around
Medford has more transit choices than many people expect. The Green Line Extension opened its Medford Branch in December 2022, with Medford/Tufts station in the city and Ball Square on the Somerville line. The Orange Line stops at Wellington, and West Medford has a stop on the Lowell Line commuter rail to North Station. I-93 runs through the city, and Routes 16, 28 and 60 connect to nearby towns.
Parks and everyday life
The Middlesex Fells Reservation, a large state park with more than 100 miles of trails, borders the north side of Medford and is popular for hiking and biking. Walking paths along the Mystic River connect to parks and playing fields. Tufts brings arts, events and restaurants to the area around the campus. Medford runs its own public school system, and families can get school details directly from Medford Public Schools.
Who Medford suits
Medford is a good fit for commuters who want rapid transit and a short trip to Boston or Cambridge, buyers who want a two-family to live in and rent, and people who want quick access to woods and trails. It is also popular with Tufts staff and people working along I-93.
