Living in Haverhill
Haverhill is a small city on the Merrimack River in the northeast corner of Massachusetts, right on the New Hampshire border. It grew up as a shoemaking center, and many of its old brick factory buildings downtown have been turned into apartments, condos, restaurants and shops. The city has also built a riverwalk along the Merrimack.
The city mixes urban blocks near downtown with quiet, hilly residential streets and more open land on its outer edges. Bradford, on the south side of the river, is a well-known residential neighborhood.
Homes you will find
- Large older homes, including Victorians, on tree-lined streets
- Two- and three-family homes close to downtown
- Condos in converted mill and factory buildings, plus newer townhouse communities
- Single-family homes with larger lots farther from the center
Getting around
The MBTA Haverhill Line has two stops in the city, Haverhill (downtown) and Bradford, with trains to North Station in Boston. The same line also stops in Lawrence, Andover, Reading and Malden. Drivers have I-495 through the city, with I-93 and I-95 a short drive away.
Parks and everyday life
Outdoor space is a big part of life here. The Winnekenni area around Kenoza Lake has walking trails and the historic Winnekenni Castle. The Bradford Rail Trail offers an easy walking and biking path, and there is a small ski area in Bradford. Downtown, Washington Street and the nearby blocks have a growing mix of restaurants and pubs. Haverhill runs its own public schools, and Northern Essex Community College has a campus in the city.
Who Haverhill suits
Haverhill works well for buyers who want more space for their budget than closer-in suburbs, commuters who are fine with the commuter rail or I-495, and investors interested in multi-families and mill condos. It also appeals to people who want lakes and trails close to home.
